Good lubrication of your mouth helps to keep it healthy
Saliva plays a central role in oral health and this role is often overlooked.
Composed of 98% water, proteins, minerals and electrolytes, saliva is produced by the salivary glands. Production varies from 0.5 to 1.5 litres per day depending on factors such as hydration, hormonal fluctuations, alcohol, tobacco or medication intake, and emotional and physical states.

In terms of our overall health, saliva aids digestion by softening and compacting the food in our mouths. It also lubricates the mouth, which allows us to swallow...and produce sounds to speak! In addition to these vital functions, it contributes greatly to the health of our mouths by
- removes food residues from our teeth, preventing prolonged acid attacks on the enamel
- regulates acidity through its alkaline composition, and prevents caries and tooth erosion
- neutralizes many bacteria with its powerful antibacterial action and protects our gums and health
- provides minerals to the teeth and activates healing (3x faster in the mouth than in the rest of the body). It therefore protects our health capital.
- Finally, it lubricates our mouth, which allows the good maintenance of the prostheses.
The main measure to ensure the production of saliva is to drink enough water. Chewing sugar-free chewing gum is another effective measure, especially after meals when brushing is not possible. Certain foods such as citrus fruits and specific gels also help to stimulate saliva production.
